Magnetic Beach

Black sand from the Magdalen Islands, which is particularly visible on Havre aux Maisons island, is made of ferromagnesian minerals that come from the erosion of local volcanic rocks. These minerals, rich in iron and magnesium, are what provide the sand with its unique dark shade. This phenomenon is the result of complex geological processes that involve decomposition and redistribution of rocks due to waves and winds. Black sand incorporated into porcelain creates a slightly rough and speckled surface, almost like a softened pumice stone. 

—  In 2024, I had the pleasure of hosting the inspiring Alphiya Joncas in my studio to collaborate on a sculptural ceramics project (Micro landscapes). It is through this project that puts a spotlight on the islands’ landscapes that I explored the incorporation of local materials with porcelain blends.
